ARTIST'S STATEMENT : “The Art of Couture” finds glory in celebrating the finest artists in history. Celebrating art achieves surface level beauty, but you will find true passion in art when you go a level deeper to celebrate the artist behind the work of art. What motivates the artist? Where do they seek inspiration? What is their process? What value did they bring to history? What is their story? These questions give meaning and depth to the piece of art and allow the viewer to immerse themselves in the true appreciation of that piece. The challenge of IIDA Unravel “The Art of Couture” gives you the opportunity to do just that, shed the layers to dive deep into the core of your assigned masterpiece. Create a runway worthy garment that captures the essence of your assigned piece of artwork, created by the famous artists in history. By creating a one of a kind piece of artwork that walks the runway, your goal is to allow viewers into the soul of your artist and their masterpiece. For example, Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance who was most known for his exquisite detail and intense realistic qualities. Therefore, if assigned ”David” by Michelangelo your garment should reflect those key qualities. If Michelangelo was here today, what would he create to walk the runway? Our challenge to you is to capture the essence of your assigned famous masterpiece. Rather than simply copy a piece of famous artwork … Be inspired by it. Become an artist yourself and allow the viewer to become truly inspired by your couture masterpiece.
